From digestion and absorption through gut bacterial metabolism and short-chain fatty acids to intestinal permeability — 18 markers in one panel. It looks not only at whether bad bacteria are present, but at the operating efficiency and barrier state of the whole gut.

Worth testing if:

  • Long-term bloating, alternating between diarrhoea and constipation
  • You take supplements but feel they are not being absorbed
  • Food sensitivity, skin or immune problems that you suspect start in the gut
  • You want to confirm leaky gut risk and track gut repair

Category

Digestion & Absorption6
Pancreatic Elastase-1 (PE-1)
A marker of exocrine pancreatic function. A low level means digestive enzyme secretion is insufficient, so the nutrients you eat are not easily broken down and absorbed.
Pancreatic Elastase-1
As above — it reflects the pancreas's capacity to secrete digestive enzymes, and is the most direct measure of malabsorption.
Putrefactive Protein Breakdown Products
The products left when protein is broken down by putrefactive bacteria in the gut. A high level commonly indicates excessive protein intake or incomplete digestion.
Valerate
A putrefactive short-chain fatty acid, reflecting how far protein is fermenting abnormally in the gut.
Isobutyrate
Produced by the putrefaction of branched-chain amino acids; a high level means protein is reaching the large intestine without being fully digested.
Isovalerate
A putrefaction marker like isobutyrate, often appearing alongside bloating and strong-smelling gas.
Gut Microbiome & Metabolism3
Beneficial SCFAs
The total output of good bacteria fermenting dietary fibre — the fuel behind your gut barrier and anti-inflammatory capacity.
n-Butyrate
The primary energy source for colon cells, directly affecting mucosal repair and immune regulation. A low level is an early signal that the gut barrier is weakening.
Stool pH
Reflects the state of gut fermentation. Alkaline often accompanies an increase in putrefactive bacteria, while acidic usually means vigorous carbohydrate fermentation.
Distribution of Beneficial SCFAs3
Acetate
The most abundant short-chain fatty acid; it is absorbed into the systemic circulation and takes part in energy and lipid metabolism.
Propionate
Produced when good bacteria ferment fibre, it is involved in regulating hepatic gluconeogenesis and is linked to appetite and blood sugar stability.
n-Butyrate
The primary energy source for colon cells, directly affecting mucosal repair and immune regulation. A low level is an early signal that the gut barrier is weakening.
Immune Regulation3
Calprotectin
The standard marker of gut inflammation, used to distinguish functional from inflammatory bowel problems.
Secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA)
The front-line immune antibody of the gut mucosa. A low level means the barrier defence is insufficient; a high level usually means it is actively fighting an irritant.
Hb-Hp Complex
The complex of haemoglobin and haptoglobin, used to detect occult bleeding in the gut.
Gut Permeability1
Zonulin
The protein that regulates the tight junctions between gut wall cells — currently the most widely cited marker for assessing leaky gut.

Frequently asked questions

No pain and no diarrhoea means my gut is fine?

Much gut imbalance progresses without any sensation at all, only surfacing as nutrient deficiency, inflammation and allergy, or unstable mood

Why aren't the probiotics I take working?

If the gut's metabolic environment and pH are out of balance, probiotics struggle to colonise and the effort is wasted

Isn't a gut test only about the microbiome?

A genuinely complete test has to combine digestive capacity, short-chain fatty acid metabolism, gut immunity and permeability — the value comes from integrating them in one go
